Grading
(for Open Campus Grading policy, click here).
Academic credit courses are graded using either letter grades or the designation “passed/not passed” using a grading policy that is consistent with the UC Davis grading policy.
If a class is offered for a letter grade, the following system will apply:
A = Excellent
B = Good
C = Fair
D = Barely passed
F = Fail
If a class is offered P/NP, the following system will apply:
P = Passed (A, B, C work)
Not Passed = (C-, D or F work)
Applying coursework toward a certificate requires a grade of “C” or better, unless noted otherwise in the certificate information.
Please note that our grading policy is consistent with the grading policy of UC Davis.
Other grading designations, which confer no academic credit:
NC = Noncredit (attended/participated)
NS = No Show
NW = No Work Submitted
WD = Withdrawn
I = Incomplete
IP = In Progress
All grades except “I” (incomplete) are final when filed by an instructor at the end of the quarter (class). No final grade except “I” may be revised by examination or the submission of additional work after the close of the quarter (class). If, however, a clerical or procedural error in the reporting of a grade by the instructor can be documented, you may request a change of grade using the Grade Change Form available from Student Services.
An incomplete grade may be assigned when the instructor determines that the student’s work is of passing quality for a significant portion of the class requirements and the student cannot complete the work in the assigned time due to extenuating circumstances. Prior to the end of the class the student completes the Incomplete Grade Petition and submits it to the instructor. The “I” grade is assigned when the Incomplete Grade Petition is submitted with class grades by the instructor. The petition is a written agreement between the student and the instructor detailing the work to be completed and deadline for submission (not to exceed 365 days from the end of the course). For Extension classes, the “I” grade must be replaced by the submission of a final grade by the instructor by the agreed upon date or the “I” grade will be replaced with “WD” (indicating withdrawn, no academic credit). An “I” grade does not entitle the student to attend future sessions of the class or access to online course material.
The policy on resolving incomplete grades in Open Campus classes is different and can be found here.
Instructors have two weeks from the last day of class to send grades to UC Davis Extension. Some exceptions apply. Grade reports for courses offered for academic credit are sent within two weeks after the grades are received from the instructor. Grades will not be given over the phone.
Students who wish to take academic credit courses for noncredit must notify UC Davis Extension in writing before the last day of the class. No hours are recorded for credit courses taken on a noncredit (audit) basis. Send written notification to:
