Pruning and Care of Landscape Fruit and Nut Trees
Learn
how to prune all major types of fruit trees for aesthetic beauty,
maximum fruit production, good fruit size and optimal annual
production. Look at the bearing habit and proper pruning methods used
to maintain productive fruit and nut trees. Specific pruning
instructions are provided in lecture format for apple, pear, peach,
plum, cherry, apricot, almond, walnut, citrus, persimmon and olive
trees.
Lecture
is followed by actual field pruning demonstrations on several of these
species in the campus orchards. Also learn about basic irrigation,
fertility, weed control, fruit and nut thinning, and pest control of
these trees, with an emphasis on organic and minimal pesticide use for
fruit and nut trees around homes.
This course is designed for homeowners and professional landscapers seeking information on the management and care of home fruit and nut trees.
Instructor(s):
Joseph Connell is a farm advisor with UC Cooperative Extension, Butte County, specializing in almonds, olives, citrus, subtropicals and ornamentals.
Paul Vossen is a farm advisor with UC Cooperative Extension, Sonoma County, specializing in tree fruit and nut crops, vegetable crops and small farm specialty crops. He coordinates an educational and scientific research program that is responsive to the needs of approximately 1,000 farmers in Sonoma and Marin counties. He is recognized as a statewide expert in organic apple production; olive oil production, processing and sensory evaluation; and chestnut production.
