Community Jazz Band Workshop
This course is designed as a learning experience for adult amateur musicians, and is open to all without audition. Each two-hour session will include one-half hour of instruction, including jazz theory, and one and one-half hours of rehearsal. Music will be chosen and arranged according to the skill level of the participants. Participants will learn how to play big band jazz music of many styles, including Brazilian and Afro-Cuban. Fundamental aspects of jazz improvisation will be presented and participants will have opportunities for solos. An additional option for those interested will be the opportunity to present their own arrangements, under the guidance of the instructor. The course will have three core instructors: percussion, strings and piano/woodwind. Guest artists may be brought in to supplement instruction for specific sections if warranted, e.g., trombonist, trumpet player, etc.
