Certificate Requirements
Courses may be taken individually or as part of the certificate program. You are awarded a Certificate in Human Resource Development and Management upon the successful completion (with a grade of "C" or better) of 19 units (10 required, nine elective) and submission of the application form and fee. Courses are typically offered in the evenings, to better serve the needs of working professionals. It is possible to complete this program in a year or less. Tuition for the entire certificate program is $4,800-$5,750, depending on when you enroll. The certificate application fee ($45), textbooks and parking are not included in the tuition fee.

Join other human resource professionals for an in-depth look at the strategic contribution of human resource management to the total business enterprise. Learn essential strategies to combine human resource theory with practice.
Focus on department design and
staffing as well as the human resource manager's role in motivation,
morale and
influencing organizational productivity. Explore ways to plan for and
meet
staffing needs, examine compensation and benefit practices and trends,
and
discuss the effects of legislation, professional standards and a union
environment on the operation of the human resources function.

Employment Law

Explore
the historical
development of the dual doctrines of labor-management relations
(collectively
bargained terms and conditions of employment) and social legislation
(legal
protections in the workplace, such legislation often being sponsored by
labor
organizations). Examine federal and state wage and hour laws
and analyze
their applications for both the public and private sectors.
Learn about the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the California Family Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Title VII, and the California Fair Employment and Housing Act. Explore the policies for workplace violence, employee privacy and the interface of workers' compensation remedies with FMLA and the ADA.

Organizational Development

Change-management, problem-solving and systematic planning can increase individual, departmental and organizational effectiveness. Learn the elements of a successful organizational development program, including a variety of strategies for intervention grounded in modern management and behavioral science.
Discuss the history and development of organizational development, including its underlying assumptions, values, theories, concepts and ethical considerations. Discover ways to improve organizational communications while utilizing and developing human resources, and gain skills in customer relations, group effectiveness and employee satisfaction.

Ethics in the Workplace

Heighten your awareness and understanding of ethical issues in the workplace. Learn to avoid the slippery slope of an unethical work environment and gain a conceptual framework and practical strategies for making ethical and effective business decisions. You will learn when and where ethical issues are most likely to surface and how to maintain your integrity. You will also gain an understanding of the impact of cultural and organizational pressures to conform, and explore a variety of ethical decision-making models. Business experience and case studies form the core of this highly interactive course in which you will evaluate possible courses of action and respond to challenging situations.

SPHR/PHR Certification: Preparation Course

If you've been planning to earn your Professional Human Resources (PHR®) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR®) designation, now is the time to enroll in this updated and expanded Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) exam preparation course based on the SHRM Learning System.
Many human resource professionals find they have a professional edge after passing the national Professional in Human Resources or Senior Professional in Human Resources certification exams offered by the Human Resource Certification Institute. Prepare yourself for the exam as you examine strategic management practices, workforce planning and employment, total rewards, compensation and benefits, human resource development, employee and labor relations, occupational health, safety, security and risk management.
Expect to spend eight to 10 hours of study time per week in addition to classroom time in order to successfully complete the national certification exam. Enrollment two weeks before the start date is highly recommended to ensure that your course materials are available at the first session. Eligibility requirements
Minimum criteria for taking the PHR exam are:
- 1 year of demonstrated professional (exempt) HR experience with a Master's degree or higher
- 2 years of demonstrated professional (exempt) HR experience with a Bachelor's degree
- 4 years of demonstrated professional (exempt) HR experience with less than a Bachelor's degree

- 4 years of demonstrated professional (exempt) HR experience with a Master's degree or higher

Effective Negotiation Strategies

beneficial resolution. Through the use of skill-building
exercises, case
studies and simulations, examine the interest-based negotiation model
through
practical and theoretical perspectives. Focus on the interest-based

the different values, priorities and goals of each party.

President Jimmy Carter his Nobel Prize for Peace with the Camp

Effective Performance Management

One of the most critical areas of employee relationships--and one of the biggest challenges faced by management today--is conducting effective performance appraisals and determining appropriate merit increases. Learn to give performance appraisals that help motivate employees to achieve goals and increase their value to the organization. Discover how to:
- Establish performance criteria
- Use various appraisal formats
- Conduct a meaningful performance discussion
- Initiate ongoing coaching
- Avoid common mistakes made by managers in evaluating their employees
- Encourage the role of employees in preparing for performance discussions
Since both managers and employees often view performance appraisals with anxiety, attention is given to preparing for and conducting performance discussions that are objective, complete and defensible. You'll also share experiences and participate in various exercises with other participants to better understand how to obtain the best possible performance from employees.

Training Design and Delivery

Learn the concepts and skills needed to design and deliver effective training: conduct a needs assessment; develop measurable learning objectives; design creative, learner-centered curriculum; and determine training effectiveness.
Build upon the foundation of adult learning theories with concept sequencing and presentation, interactive design strategies and training design management. Create an interactive learning environment using experiential training methods, facilitate effective group interaction and identify appropriate training activities and materials to enhance comprehension, retention and application of training material.

Overview of California Workers' Compensation

Learn about the California Workers' Compensation system from the perspective of all parties—injured workers, employers, claims personnel, and medical and legal providers. Gain an understanding of organizational structure, employment, claims process, decision making, temporary and permanent disability benefits, medical treatment and litigation.
