Low Impact Development (LID) Workshop for Mendocino County

The many diverse geographical and hydrological regions of California make it impractical to recommend a one-size-fits-all approach to storm water management. Low Impact Development techniques that work well in one region of the state may need to be modified to work equally well in another region. Therefore, UC Davis Extension is partnering with counties throughout the state to present workshops focusing on regional approaches to the implementation of LID. Join UC Davis Extension and the County of Mendocino for the first one-day Low Impact Development (LID) Workshop. With experts from the LID field and county officials with first-hand implementation experience, the workshop will focus on the practial application, design, implementation and maintenance of LID techniques.

LID Defined

LID is an innovative storm water management approach with a basic principle that is modeled after nature: manage rainfall at the source using uniformly distributed decentralized micro-scale controls. To offset the impact of urban development, LID relies on various landscape features known as site specific Best Management Practices (BMPs). These can be used to effectively address water quantity and hydrology, but can also be used in regard to water quality, natural resources and biodiversity. LID techniques can also help improve the overall efficiency and costs of a storm water management program by reducing the size or need for certain structural techniques like large detention basins. LID is applicable in various settings, from residential and commercial to small and large development. It can be part of high density and "smart growth" strategies or found in conventional subdivision and large lot developments.
