Specialized Studies Program in Teaching the Gifted and Talented
Designed for classroom teachers, this program helps educators meet the needs of high-ability and accelerated learners. Learn how to differentiate your curricula to meet various readiness levels, address the social and emotional needs of the gifted and talented, respond to the motivational issues these students present, and enhance special abilities and interests of your students in both mixed and self-contained classroom settings.
The Teaching the Gifted and Talented Specialized Studies Award is awarded upon completion of three required courses (eight units). Students must maintain a "B" average in the program coursework.

Required Courses
Identifying and Serving the Diverse Gifted and Talented Learner
3 units
This course is designed to provide an understanding of issues related to identifying and serving gifted students from diverse backgrounds, including English language learners. Participants gain experience in identifying and accommodating gifted students who may not be recognized by teachers and psychologists through traditional means, including students with learning disabilities. Activities will include demonstrations of techniques by which to apply identification information to classroom practice.
Differentiated Classroom Instruction with Mixed-Ability Students
3 units
This course supports teachers in establishing classrooms that are responsive to their students' varied readiness levels, learning profiles and interests. Recognizing that "one size does not fit all", learn key principles and instructional strategies for differentiating the core curriculum. This course provides models to develop curriculum appropriate for special populations, such as English learners and students identified as gifted and talented.
Social and Emotional Needs of the Gifted and Talented Learner
2 units
Designed for both parents and teachers of gifted students, this class helps you develop an awareness of what gifted means and understand the purposes of the gifted program as described by law. Learn how to increase sensitivity for gifted and talented students and address common issues, problems and feelings as perceived and expressed by these students. This course provides educators and parents with concrete strategies for managing students' emotional and social needs, as well as strategies for helping students understand and accept themselves.
