Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorders


Gain an understanding of autism spectrum disorders and the implications the disability has on an individual's learning, behavior and ability to process information. Learn current research on potential causes and treatments, provisions for service, legal and ethical issues, and areas of impairment. 

View video clips of behaviors discussed in class and listen to guest lecturers, including several from the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute. Participate in group discussions and perspective building activities designed to increase awareness of living with an autism spectrum disorder. This course, the first of three in the Autism Spectrum Disorders Specialized Studies Program, is designed for educators, paraprofessionals, service providers, family members and employers of people with an autism spectrum disorder.

Instructor(s):

Catherine Smith, M.A., has worked with children on the autism spectrum since 1998. She began her career as a behavior technician providing in-home discrete trial-training and intensive behavioral intervention to young children with ASD. Following the completion of her degree, she began working as an Autism Specialist, providing consultation, program development and staff training for the Butte County SELPA.

When:

Enroll now through Jan. 4 and complete by March 19. Passwords issued Jan. 11.

Format:

You must provide your email address when enrolling to receive your password. You will receive your password via email on the start date, or within two business days of enrolling if you enroll after the start date. From the day you receive your password, you will have until the completion date noted above to complete the course. If you do not receive your password in the time frame noted, please email us at: adminsupport@extensiondlc.net . This is not a self-paced course. Students will progress through the course together. Lessons will be posted one week at a time. The previous week's lesson will remain available for the duration of the course. Students, who enroll after the start date of the course, will have to contact the instructor regarding missed lessons.

Fee:

$615.00 ($645.00 if postmarked after 12/27/2009).

Special Discount fee:

10% discount for organizations enrolling three or more people at the same time in the same course. All registrations must be submitted at the same time and fees paid with one check, credit card or purchase order.

Enrollment policies:

Refund or transfer requests will be approved, less a $30 processing fee, if a written email request, sent to studentservices@extensiondlc.net is received within two weeks of the student's start date and if the student has not gone beyond Lesson 1 of the course. The student will need to include his/her name, the course title and the course section number.
