Reading Practicum


Transfer theory into practice in this culminating experience of the Reading Certificate Program. Extend the principles and guided practice you received during previous courses by engaging in 45 hours of documented mentored work in a classroom. Selected practicum sites are designed to provide balanced, comprehensive reading and language arts instruction and ensure you experience diverse training opportunities teaching English Language Learners, beginning readers and students with reading difficulties. In the classroom, assess struggling readers at both early and intermediate levels, and tutor or teach a small group of struggling readers at two or more reading levels. Coursework satisfies requirements set by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for the CCTC Reading Certificate.

Prerequisite:

Issues in Reading Instruction, Developing Fluent Readers, Teaching Comprehension Strategies, Intervention with Struggling Readers, Assessment-Based Reading Instruction You must be enrolled in the Reading Certificate Program.

Instructor(s):

Sharon VanVleck is former director of elementary curriculum and staff development for Sacramento City Unified School District and is currently on loan to the Reading Lions Center of the Sacramento County Office of Education. In addition to serving as a principal for the Sacramento City Unified School District, specializing in reading issues, she has taught reading courses, presented at conferences and provided reading support to school districts throughout California.
