Legal Fundamentals of Special Education Advocacy


With a steady increase in the number of children with disabilities, there are not enough trained professionals to educate and support families navigating the special education system. In this course, acquire functional advocacy skills for professional or personal use. Learn about the complexities of special education law as it is currently practiced in California. Explore and analyze advocacy planning for effectiveness and cost. Service providers such as social workers, child therapists and nurses, as well as attorneys, advocates and parents gain important insight into the pragmatics of this fascinating area.

Prerequisite:

A background or experience with special needs children and/or adults is preferred.

Instructor(s):

Judith Cohen is a special educator and practicing attorney in the field of special education advocacy. She directed a program for children with special needs for many years, taught at the university level and made presentations at numerous professional conferences and parent groups. She is the author of How to Succeed as Your Child's Advocate without Really Crying (Get MAD) along with a number of other educational titles.
