Annual Intensive Certificate Program in Workplace Health and Safety
If you are responsible for employee health and safety at your workplace, this five-week program can help you expand your knowledge of current health and safety issues and regulations, and learn to create and maintain a safer work environment. It is specifically designed to enhance the awareness and practical skills of those responsible for employee health and safety.
The program examines critical safety and health issues confronting private business, industry and government, and provides the training necessary for managing a proactive health and safety program.

The intensive certificate program covers all required courses and many electives offered through the regular Workplace Health and Safety Certificate Program. Instead of commuting to UC Davis for a series of two- or four-day classes over a period of one to two years, you spend just 24 days in class, spread out through June, July, and August. This makes the intensive certificate program particularly attractive to people who live a long distance from Davis.
Program Requirements
The intensive certificate program consists of 12 courses. Your progress through each is monitored with exams and/or written assignments. To earn the certificate, you must successfully complete every course with a grade of "C" or better.

Tuition for the Workplace Health and Safety Intensive Certificate Program is $5,900 if you enroll by May 31 (with a $600 deposit). If you enroll after May 31, the full fee of $6,300 is due at the time of your enrollment. The tuition includes all lectures, educational materials, morning refreshments daily, a parking permit and the certificate fee.

Required Courses
Health and Safety for Workers: Laws and Regulations

Learn the relevant laws and regulations pertaining to occupational health and safety, including Cal/OSHA and federal OSHA; criminal considerations, such as supervisors’ and managers’ responsibilities; workers’ compensation jurisdiction, claims and benefits; the claims process and program administration; and legal liability. Case studies illustrate both simple and complex issues.
Administering health and safety
programs requires up-to-the-minute, working knowledge of laws and
regulations. Learn
to use the Internet to research the most current regulations during a
computer
lab session. This course is for individuals who have interests in, or
responsibilities for, administering occupational health and safety
programs.

OSHA Training Requirements Overview

Identify key
training
requirements in respiratory protection, blood-borne pathogens,
forklifts,
ergonomics, hazard communication, the HAZWOPER standard and other
areas. A wide
range of health and safety training requirements are identified in both
federal
and state OSHA standards. Learn to properly document the training each
employee
receives in the workplace. This course focuses on the actual training
requirements involved in each standard and will not include a detailed
discussion of each one. This is an elective course for the Workplace Health and Safety Certificate Program

Industrial Safety Hazard Control

Industrial Hygiene

Gain an overview of occupational health hazards, including how they can be recognized, evaluated and controlled. Designed for those responsible for employee safety, this course discusses how industries are regulated and how to apply industrial hygiene principles in the workplace. Additionally, instructors focus on the topics most likely to confront safety managers today, such as indoor air quality, noise protection and mold. This course provides a basic understanding of industrial hygiene that will allow you to communicate safety principles to employees, perform some environmental evaluation and evaluate independent industrial hygiene consultants. This is a required course for the Workplace Health and Safety Certificate Program, the Intensive Certificate Program in Health and Safety and the Health and Safety Trainer Specialized Studies Program.

Health and Safety Management and Program Development

Explore the various approaches to health and safety management, including methods to obtain and maintain top management support; methods to obtain and maintain employee/union support; how to determine the real cost of accidents; behavior modification practices; the success and failure of rewards and recognition programs; and techniques for system-based auditing. Learn how to investigate the causes of accidents, organize health and safety committees, and develop health and safety training programs. This is a required course for the Workplace Health and Safety Certificate Program, the Intensive Certificate Program in Health and Safety and the Health and Safety Trainer Specialized Studies Program.

Confined Space: An Overview

Examine hazard evaluation of confined spaces and review appropriate work practices as mandated by federal and state laws. Confined spaces can be highly dangerous, and both federal and Cal/OSHA laws regulate their entry. By their nature, confined spaces contain a variety of problems: atmospheric hazards, the accumulation of toxic materials, flammable or explosive atmospheres, and physical hazards. This is an elective course for the Workplace Health and Safety Certificate Program and a required course for the Intensive Certificate Program in Health and Safety.

Ergonomics in the Workplace

Learn the
fundamentals of
ergonomics in industrial and office workplaces. Discuss medical issues,
regulatory strategies, engineering solutions and productivity
improvements. If
your employees experience problems with lifting, repetitive motion or
overexertion,
their improper work practices may cause serious and long-term
disabilities. A
review of safe work practices with a focus on basic ergonomics may help
your
organization. Develop ergonomic recognition and identification skills
necessary
for implementation of an overall injury prevention strategy.

Emergency Management Techniques

Gain practical experience in managing emergency situations, and learn to respond effectively in crisis situations. Examine the management techniques common to all emergency situations, including natural disaster, fires, and mass medical and hazardous materials incidents. Simulations and opportunities to form small incident command groups and to solve industrial emergency problems based on actual case histories are included.
Discussions
cover effective emergency planning, legal responsibilities,
administrative
notifications, government response plans and agencies, incident
commands systems
as an emergency management tool, crisis management skills,
decision-making
under pressure, effective communication techniques, and media and

Protective Clothing

Learn about the regulations and standards regarding personal protective equipment, limitations on use, the different types of chemical protective clothing and use of chemical compatibility charts. Other topics include eye, face, hand, foot, head and hearing protection, protective clothing decontamination and protective clothing for working with biohazards. This class is particularly helpful to anyone responsible for a personal protective equipment program. This is an elective course for the Workplace Health and Safety Certificate Program and a required course for the Intensive Certificate Program in Health and Safety.

Respiratory Protection

Discover the requirements for a respiratory protection program described by Cal/OSHA regulations. Review regulatory requirements, guidance documents and consider exposure evaluation. Learn the advantages and disadvantages of various types of respiratory protection, respirator change-out schedules and fit-testing procedures. An introduction to operating self-contained breathing apparatus concludes the day's activities. This course is primarily for managers, supervisors and those responsible for purchasing respiratory protective equipment.

Fire and Life Safety Awareness

Discover the types of built-in fire protection features and fire and life safety hazards common to the educational and workplace environment. This course features "passive" versus "active" fire protection features, maintenance of exits, knowledge and use of fire extinguishers, impact to and from other occupants, human behavior before and during an emergency, proper storage techniques, and services potentially available through local fire departments. This is an elective course for the Workplace Health and Safety Certificate Program and a required course for the Intensive Certificate Program in Health and Safety.

Incident Investigation Techniques

Acquire the knowledge, practical skills and tools you need to conduct incident investigations. Designed with both the novice and seasoned professional in mind, topics in this interactive course include: principles of incident investigation, responsibilities in the investigation process, investigation planning and preparation, the seven steps of initial response, tools and techniques for investigation, the collection and examination of information, root cause analysis, the incident investigation report, and effective real-world corrective actions.
