Professional Concentration in Health and Safety Training

Gain a solid foundation in basic health and safety with our four core courses, then learn to develop and deliver health and safety programs with our five-day trainer course. This highly focused program meets a portion of the trainer requirements under Code of Federal Regulations 1910.120 (e)(5) and the Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response standard (HAZWOPER) (q)(5), which states students must have the academic credentials, competence and instructional experience necessary for teaching these subjects.

The Professional Concentration in Health and Safety Training is designed specifically for those who train people in their organization or facility about health and safety issues—including safety directors and officers, environmental supervisors, union representatives, health and safety technicians, occupational health specialists/nurses, risk managers, compliance managers, plant or facilities managers, production supervisors, human resource specialists and workers’ compensation specialists.

Required Courses
Health and Safety for Workers: Laws and Regulations
1.5 quarter units academic credit, X431.9. 2.51 ABIH CEUs, 14 MCLE CEUs, 15 REHS Hours
Learn the relevant laws and regulations pertaining to occupational health and safety, including Cal/OSHA and federal OSHA; criminal considerations, such as supervisors’ and managers’ responsibilities; workers’ compensation jurisdiction, claims and benefits; the claims process and program administration; and legal liability. Case studies illustrate both simple and complex issues.
Administering health and safety programs requires up-to-the-minute, working knowledge of laws and regulations. Learn to use the Internet to research the most current regulations during a computer lab session. This course is for individuals who have interests in, or responsibilities for, administering occupational health and safety programs. This is a required course for the Workplace Health and Safety Certificate Program, the Intensive Certificate Program in Health and Safety and the Professional Concentration in Health and Safety Training.

Health and Safety Management and Program Development

Explore the various approaches to health and safety management, including methods to obtain and maintain top management support; methods to obtain and maintain employee/union support; how to determine the real cost of accidents; behavior modification practices; the success and failure of rewards and recognition programs; and techniques for system-based auditing. Learn how to investigate the causes of accidents, organize health and safety committees, and develop health and safety training programs. This is a required course for the Workplace Health and Safety Certificate Program, the Intensive Certificate Program in Health and Safety and the Professional Concentration in Health and Safety Training.

Industrial Hygiene
3 quarter units academic credit, X488.1. 30 REHS Hours
Gain an overview of occupational health hazards, including how they can be recognized, evaluated and controlled. Designed for those responsible for employee safety, this course discusses how industries are regulated and how to apply industrial hygiene principles in the workplace. Additionally, instructors focus on the topics most likely to confront safety managers today, such as indoor air quality, noise protection and mold.
This course provides a basic understanding of industrial hygiene that will allow you to communicate safety principles to employees, perform some environmental evaluation and evaluate independent industrial hygiene consultants. This is a required course for the Workplace Health and Safety Certificate Program, the Intensive Certificate Program in Health and Safety and the Professional Concentration in Health and Safety Training.
Recommended Prerequisite: Those with limited scientific
training would benefit by first taking the course Introduction to
Chemical Hazards.

Industrial Safety Hazard Control

Expand your understanding of industrial safety hazard
control by learning to identify and assess hazards in the workplace. Learn to
recognize priority hazards as well as strategies for removing them. Discover
how to use regulations as tools to identify and control hazards. Examine case
studies and learn from the field, then brainstorm potential solutions to
real-life problems. This is a required course for the Workplace Health and Safety Certificate Program, the Professional Concentration in Health and Safety Training and the Intensive Certificate
Program in Health and Safety.

Designing and Delivering Effective Health and Safety Training
4 quarter units academic credit, X426.6. 6.68 ABIH CEUs, 40 REHS Hours
Build the skills necessary to effectively train others in
health and safety. Learn to design, develop and deliver workplace health and
safety training programs using a wide range of instructional methods. Explore
various approaches to instruction, including participatory techniques and tips
for engaging a specific audience and facilitating discussions and small group
activity methods.

You will develop and deliver a presentation using the techniques covered and are encouraged to bring work-related projects and supporting materials. A laptop computer is recommended, but not required. This is a required course for the Professional Concentration in Health and Safety Training. Two units from this course can be applied as elective credit toward the Workplace Health and Safety Certificate Program.
