Learn the relevant laws and regulations pertaining to occupational health and safety, including Cal/OSHA and federal OSHA; criminal considerations, such as supervisors’ and managers’ responsibilities; workers’ compensation jurisdiction, claims and benefits; the claims process and program administration; and legal liability. Case studies illustrate both simple and complex issues.
Administering health and safety
programs requires up-to-the-minute, working knowledge of laws and
regulations. Learn
to use the Internet to research the most current regulations during a
computer
lab session. This course is for individuals who have interests in, or
responsibilities for, administering occupational health and safety
programs.

Industrial Hygiene

Gain an overview of occupational health hazards, including how they can be recognized, evaluated and controlled. Designed for those responsible for employee safety, this course discusses how industries are regulated and how to apply industrial hygiene principles in the workplace. This course provides a basic understanding of industrial hygiene that will allow you to communicate safety principles to employees, perform some environmental evaluation and evaluate independent industrial hygiene consultants. Expand your knowledge with MARPLOT and CAMEO, two of the four programs that make up the Computer Aided Management of Emergency Operations (CAMEO) suite of programs, to assist in hazardous materials emergency response and planning. MARPLOT is a mapping program with downloadable maps, aerial photography, and topographical maps of any area in the U.S. CAMEO is a compilation of templates for storing information critical for assisting in handling of hazardous materials incidents.
This course also includes the full integration of using
CAMEO
Chemicals, ALOHA, MARPLOT, and CAMEO in several exercises to get the
greatest
use out of the CAMEO suite. These programs work together to enhance
your
emergency planning and provide critical data in the event of a
hazardous materials
emergency.
- Show maps, aerial photography and/or topographical maps of any area in the U.S.
- Create layers on MARPLOT maps for chemical facilities, schools, hospitals and other areas of interest
- Show any threat zone plotted in ALOHA on a MARPLOT map
- Determine the population residing underneath a plume or threat zone, based on U.S. Census data
- Use all four programs of the CAMEO suite in integrated exercises simulating complex hazardous materials incidents

Confined Space: An Overview

Examine hazard evaluation of confined spaces and review appropriate work practices as mandated by federal and state laws. Confined spaces can be highly dangerous, and both federal and Cal/OSHA laws regulate their entry. By their nature, confined spaces contain a variety of problems: atmospheric hazards, the accumulation of toxic materials, flammable or explosive atmospheres, and physical hazards. This is an elective course for the Workplace Health and Safety Certificate Program and a required course for the Intensive Certificate Program in Health and Safety.

Construction Safety: An Overview (OSHA 10-hour)

Gain an overview of the California Construction Safety Orders. Learn to locate and apply the Construction Safety Orders, identify common hazards found on construction sites, and develop abatement techniques for these hazards. Electrical Safety

Electricity is such a familiar part of our lives that it isn't always given the respect and caution it deserves. Learn how electricity can become a hazard and the most common causes of electrical injuries, including:
- Contact with power lines
- Lack of ground-fault protection
- Path to ground missing or discontinuous
- Equipment not used in the manner prescribed
- Improper use of extension and flexible cords
- Failure to lockout electrical circuits

Emergency Management Techniques

Gain practical experience in managing emergency situations, and learn to respond effectively in crisis situations. Examine the management techniques common to all emergency situations, including natural disaster, fires, and mass medical and hazardous materials incidents. Simulations and opportunities to form small incident command groups and to solve industrial emergency problems based on actual case histories are included.

Ergonomics in the Workplace

ergonomics in industrial and office workplaces. Discuss medical issues,
regulatory strategies, engineering solutions and productivity

review of safe work practices with a focus on basic ergonomics may help

Fall Protection for the Construction Industry

Construction is the most hazardous occupation in California and falls from elevations are the leading cause of fatalities in the construction industry. The California Construction Safety Orders have many different requirements for fall protection for various trades and job functions, requiring different types of fall protection at different heights. In addition, there are numerous types of fall protection methods such as guardrails, fall arrest systems, fall restraint and safety nets and even more alternative methods to reduce fall hazards such as manlifts and scaffolds. This class is designed to unravel the mystery of fall protection safety orders and discuss types of fall protection and other methods to reduce fall hazards. This will allow you to know when fall protection is needed and how to protect employees from devastating falls. The discussion will go beyond what is required by safety orders and discuss best practices in fall protection. This course is an elective in the Workplace Health and Safety Certificate Program.

Fire and Life Safety Awareness

Discover the types of built-in fire protection features and fire and life safety hazards common to the educational and workplace environment. This course features "passive" versus "active" fire protection features, maintenance of exits, knowledge and use of fire extinguishers, impact to and from other occupants, human behavior before and during an emergency, proper storage techniques, and services potentially available through local fire departments. IIPP: Your Safety Management Action Plan

Learn how to create and maintain a successful Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP). Designed for administrators, managers and supervisors with responsibility for implementing and maintaining the IIPP in their organizations or work areas, this two-day course gives you the tools to develop or revise your written program and to use program evaluation tools to assess and monitor IIPP effectiveness. Review regulatory requirements in California T8 CCR 3203 for record keeping, response to Cal/OSHA inspections and the recent changes to the Cal/OSHA Enforcement Program related to provisions of AB 1127. Incident Investigation Techniques

Indoor Air Quality Management

Introduction to Chemical Hazards

Noise and Hearing Conservation

Respiratory Protection
