This course focuses on the dynamics between delivering scientific, technical information, and anticipating and addressing the emotional responses they cause. The instructor provides theory for understanding the laypersonís perspective and practical guidelines for communicating to that perspective. The class involves short periods of lecture using video and real world examples, followed by group practice and discussion. Participants will learn one-way communication techniques, identifying common communication pitfalls and avoiding them, and setting up opportunities for feedback, two-way communications and other stakeholder interactions. This course is especially relevant in dealing with Worker and Community Right-to-Know (RTK) regulations as well as CERCLA, CEQA, NEPA, NIOSH and RCRA.
