Environmental Planning and Design Issues for Development Projects On or Near Airports


Learn to identify and address the special conditions planning and design professionals should consider when developing non-aviation projects on or near airport property, and how alternative strategies must be considered to ensure compliance with the Federal Aviation Administration standards and regulations, California Environmental Quality Act requirements, and local codes and ordinances. 

Topics include:

  • Airport compatibility issues
  • Applicable federal, state and local agency coordination (and their sometimes competing roles)
  • Environmental concerns and alternative mitigation strategies, including water quality and wetlands, biological resources/wildlife strike hazards, cultural resources, air quality and noise
  • Smart Growth, Senate Bill 375 and residential development
  • Architecture and design considerations 

Also receive an introduction to the special planning considerations that must be addressed and the applicable regulatory guidance, including recent case studies. Guest speakers include representatives from USDA Wildlife Services, the Sacramento County Airport System and other agencies.

Instructor(s):

Lisa Harmon is a senior project manager for Mead & Hunt, Inc., with 18 years of experience as an environmental consultant. She has served as an environmental planner for Baltimore-Washington International Airport and has worked closely with airports, local governments and developers to establish review criteria and airport land use compatibility policies for proposed development projects.
David Dietz is a senior project manager for Mead & Hunt, Inc., with more than 30 years as an airport consultant. He has served as the environmental planning manager at San Francisco International Airport, and his aviation planning work has included the preparation of airport master plans, land use compatibility plans, and environmental documents. His expertise in environmental and land use compatibility issues has enabled him to lecture extensively on these topics before professional and collegiate audiences.
