New Center for Sustainable Communities Research

UC Davis Extension's Land Use and Natural Resources is proud to be a founding partner in the recently launched California Center for Sustainable Communities. This UC-wide center will bring together academics, policy-makers and practitioners from across the state to address California's most pressing sustainability challenges. UC Davis Extension's participation will be led by Jeff Loux, Ph.D. The Center is located at UCLA and is directed by Stephanie Pincetl, Ph.D. Funding for the project is provided by the California Energy Commission Public Interest Energy Research program. Featured courses

Green Building Design Studio
Structured as a design studio, you will have six weeks to develop conceptual plans for a site and for an individual building, set of buildings or open space. You will work in small groups to explore the challenges in designing a sustainable project at different scales. Experts on different aspects of sustainable development and green building will provide feedback as you work through the design process.

LEED Building Certification
Gain an in-depth understanding of the new LEED Building, Design and Construction (BD&C) rating systems and the process to document and obtain certification. Learn the process of registering, documenting and certifying LEED BD&C projects. Review case studies, local project examples and tour a local LEED-certified building.

Energy Resource Management: Regulatory
Learn the difference between regulations and tariffs pertaining to electrical generation, transmission and distribution and those pertaining to gas production, transmission and distribution. You will also survey indoor air quality standards, rate structures and learn how to conduct a load study.

Bioenergy Systems Design
Gain an understanding of biomass technologies and characteristics, engineering bioenergy feedstocks, biochemical conversion, anaerobic digestions, thermochemical and physicochemical conversions, biomass production systems and feedstock logistics. Explore the environmental, economic and social impacts.
