Communication and Culture—4 weeks

The Communication and Culture Program is a comprehensive four-week program with four hours of instruction each day. It is ideal for participants who want an intensive learning experience within a short time frame. This program is offered in both winter and summer. The focus is on American culture and conversational fluency with an emphasis on vocabulary building, as well as pronunciation, natural speech and idioms, and American customs. Students practice in class with U.S. conversation partners. The core classes are Intercultural Research Project, U.S. Society and Culture, Listening and Pronunciation, and Oral Grammar.
The Program
- Four weeks long—four total hours of class each day
- Offered four times per year: January, February, July and August
- Open to students of all English-speaking levels
- Small class size (12-18) for high interaction among instructors and students
- Optional trips to Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, San Francisco, Napa Valley and Los Angeles
- Cultural exposure and academic advising for students
- UC Davis students as conversation partners both in and out of class
- Recreational, cultural and social activities with U.S. student leaders
- Weekend trips to nearby attractions

For advanced students, a selection of academic electives is offered, including:

- Everyday Expressions and Idioms
- Critical Thinking
Placement by English Language Ability
Students are placed according to their written and oral evaluation upon arrival at UC Davis. This program is open to students of all skill levels.
Field Trips
During this program, optional trips are planned to scenic, cultural and historic places like San Francisco, Sacramento, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, the Napa Valley wine region, Las Vegas, San Diego and Los Angeles. The field trips (which vary each quarter) offer a unique opportunity to see California and experience American culture with fellow students and RPIs.
