Host Families Wanted

Thank you for your interest in the Center for International Education Housing program. CIE strives to place international students in living and housing arrangements that will give these students an opportunity to practice their English, learn about American culture, and in turn, allow American families to learn about the cultures of the students they host. It is our goal to place international students in homes where they will be treated as part of the family.

Host families receive a stipend to help cover the cost of housing and caring for another person. The stipend amount is calculated based on the type of housing and meal arrangement you agree to. Please refer to the stipend page for more information on the amount of the stipend.

It is the goal of the Center for International Education Housing program to place international students in homes where they will be treated as part of the family. As a host family you must provide a private (unless the student has agreed to a shared room) room for sleeping, studying and privacy. There should be a bed with linens, storage for personal belongings and clothing (i.e., a closet or dresser), adequate lighting, fire exit/window, and a desk with a chair. You must also provide free Internet access.

To learn more about what to expect, read the Host Family Guidelines and Responsibilities. Be sure to read this information before you complete your application to become a host family. Please note: You must complete and submit this application in one sitting. You are not able to save your work and return at a later time.

For students

Homestay

With a homestay arrangement you will live with a local family and experience an American family lifestyle. There are many benefits to being placed with a homestay host family. The cultural experience is unmatched by any other residential placement and is an excellent way to expand your cultural and educational experience.

Homestay housing arrangements are not one-size-fits all. You can choose to have your own room or you can share a room with another student. You can eat all or some of your meals with your host family. Or, you can choose to take care of all of your meals on your own. You choose the situation that best meets your needs. Visit the fees page for detailed information on the various homestay arrangements and the fee for each.

Every family is different and we do our best to match you with a family that can fulfill the learning and cultural experience you are looking for. We screen all host families to ensure that your homestay experience is positive.

CIE Housing representatives are available to you at all times before and during your homestay residence. We are here to encourage a smooth transition into your home-away-from-home.

To learn more about what to expect from a homestay experience, read the Student Guidelines and Responsibilities. Be sure to read this information before you complete your application. If you would like to request placement with a local host family during your stay in Davis please complete and submit an application and pay the non-refundable housing placement fee.

Dormitories (Summer quarter only)

Dormitories (conveniently located near the UC Davis campus) are often open to international students during the summer. Students share a room with one other student. Rooms come equipped with two beds, dressers and desks. Meals are provided in the campus dining halls, and membership at the Activities and Recreation Center is included. Please contact us at ciehousing@ucdavis.edu for availability.

Renting a Room in a Private House or Apartment

Many Davis families and student groups rent out rooms in their own homes for approximately $450-$650 per month. Renting a room is an excellent opportunity to live with others who are not part of the International Programs. Students can make these arrangements on their own once they arrive in Davis. For a preview of what might be available, check the "Community Housing Listing," offered by the Associated Students of UC Davis at http://chl.ucdavis.edu (click on "view our listings") or on Craigslist at http://sacramento.craigslist.org/.
