English for Medical Professionals


Program Overview

English for Medical Professionals is a four-week program designed to improve English oral communication skills. Topics include language skills for patient interaction, professional presentation skills, American vocabulary and idioms and accent improvement. This program consists of approximately 25 hours of classroom instruction per week, lectures by medical professionals, discussion groups on current social topics related to the medical field and tours of local medical facilities.

  • This course is designed for physicians, dentists and other health professionals who want to improve their ability to communicate effectively in English in a healthcare setting.
  • Participants attend lectures on contemporary health care and scientific topics and make visits to medical facilities including the UC Davis Medical Center, a major university medical and research center.
  • Classroom instruction focuses on vocabulary, the use of idioms and accent improvement, with ample opportunity for practice during discussions, simulated patient interactions and oral presentations to colleagues.

Who Should Attend This Program?

English for Medical Professionals is designed for intermediate to advanced level English speakers interested in improving their English language skills for success in medical careers. Participants include medical doctors, veterinarians and other medical professionals.

Course components

The academic coursework is designed to improve conversational fluency and understanding among professionals and with patients. Students also learn the skills necessary to make professional presentations, discuss current social topics associated with the medical field and improve their pronunciation. In addition to other tour options available through ITEC, this program includes tours of the following Northern California medical schools and facilities:

  • UC Davis School of Medicine
    The School of Medicine is headquartered on the U.C. Davis campus and serves the region from the Central Valley to the Northern California border. UC Davis School of Medicine was ranked second in producing primary care physicians by a 1995 U.S. News and World Report analysis of the 125 medical schools in the United States.
  • UC Davis Medical Center
    The majority of the clinical care conducted by the School of Medicine takes place at this comprehensive care facility, which offers a full range of in-patient and diagnostic services in Sacramento.
  • UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine
    The School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis is the primary health care resource for the animal population of California. It is one of 26 veterinary schools in the United States and offers an intensive four-year program preparing students for diverse career opportunities.
