English for Science and Technology—4 weeks

English for Science and Technology is designed to help international undergraduates and graduate students and professionals become more comfortable using English as a common language in the fields of science and technology. In a highly interactive learning environment—mixing group and individual project work with in-class and out-of-class activities and visits—students improve their overall English language skills (i.e., listening, speaking, reading and writing) as well as the critical thinking, oral presenation, interviewing and research skills needed as international scientists, engineers and technical experts.
Participants also visit laboratories and high-tech companies and are introduced to exciting hot topics in research and the latest applications. They increase their awareness of issues and concerns of businesses in emerging technologies. Upon completion of the English for Science and Technology Program, participants will:
- Have improved their overall English skill areas, their oral presenation skills, their analytical research skills and strenghtened their pronunciation
- Think and discuss critically and logically about a variety of scientific and technological topics with peers
- Organize their own ideas, create slides and make effective oral presenations
- Be aware of issues and concerns of new businesses in emerging technologies
Program
- Four weeks in summer and winter
- 20 hours of instruction per week
- Three levels of instruction
- Includes lectures and site trips to high-tech companies and laboratories
- Small classes (approximately 12-16 students)
- UC Davis students as conversation partners
- Highly-qualified and experienced instructors
Placement by English Language Ability
Participants take and English placement test upon arrival and are placed in English as a Second Language (ESL) courses accordingly. Students are expected to test at the low-intermediate levels and above.
