Introduction to Fall Birds of Northern California

The diversity of birds in California is greater than in any other state or province in North America. Observe these remarkable creatures and experience the beauty of fall in Northern California in this course designed for novice to intermediate birders. Discover the fascinating natural history and ecology of Northern California’s birds and learn to identify birds in the wild, including the area’s year-long residents, winter visitors and fall migrants.

Three field trips are designed to include the major bird habitats of central California, including:

  • The woodlands and lakes of the coastal ranges

  • The bays and beaches of the coast

  • The grasslands, marshes and wetlands of the Central Valley

The lecture preceding each field trip focuses on the ecology of the habitats and the birds we expect to observe. Lectures are peppered with birding tips, such as how to join other birders online and how to select optical equipment. This course complements the companion course, Introduction to Spring Birds of Northern California, taught in the spring.
