The Economics of the Constitution

In 1913, Charles A. Beard published a book entitled An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the United States. For this, he was fired from Columbia University. Perhaps Beard was a poor scholar. But this is not congruent with his subsequent career and his being concurrently elected as president of the American Historical Association and the American Political Science Association. Or it may indicate that the issue of economics cannot be separated from an understanding of the U.S. Constitution. In this course we will explore the issue.
