Four Van Goghs: A Comparative Study in Performances

Few if any of the revered great painters have been featured more often in cinema than Vincent van Gogh. His life and work are an ideal format for both camera and actor. This course features a selection of four totally different interpretations of Van Gogh, thus providing for a unique discussion on acting interpretations as performed within boundaries set by actor, story, era and nationality. Movies screened will be Lust for Life (1956, by Kirk Douglas); Vincent & Theo (1990, by Tim Roth); Van Gogh (1991 by actor Jacques Dutronc [France] ); and The Eyes of Van Gogh (2005, by Alexander Barnett). Short examples will be shown with John Hunt, Tcheky Karyo and Martin Scorsese. Note: Some sessions may begin 30 – 45 minutes early due to the length of the selected film.
