Globe Education Academy for Teachers

This course is a 12 CEU option for registered participants of the UC Davis School of Education Globe Education Academy for Teachers.

The course is comprised of three segments:

  • Professional development workshops at the Mondavi Center in the spring presented by Globe Education practitioners and regional Shakespeare education directors
  • A two-week summer residency at Shakespeare’s Globe in Bankside, London
  • A fall festival Shakespeare play at the Mondavi Center with approx. 150 students from the teachers’ classrooms

In London, participants will deepen their appreciation of Shakespeare’s themes and text and learn about movement, voice and staging from theatre professionals. Teachers interact with members of the Globe who are responsible for design, direction, movement, music, text and voice, and explore how productions at the Globe are conceived and mounted. They will attend Globe performances and excursions and work together on the Globe stage. During the second week of the summer residency, teachers work in groups with Globe directors on a scene from their play, which is then presented on the Globe stage at midnight. (This is referred to as the Midnight Matinee.)

Globe Education practitioners will lead explorations of practical, active approaches to teaching Shakespeare in the classroom. There is opportunity for formal reflection on process and discoveries and for consideration of how this learning might inform their teaching practice. The fall festival showcase will be held at the Mondavi Center and will afford an opportunity for participants to demonstrate how they have applied the language and work of Shakespeare in their classrooms. Participants will use their summer residency learning as they work with students from their own classrooms to prepare them for their own scenes.
