Introduction to Health Informatics

In this introductory course, students gain broad exposure to the field of informatics with an emphasis on its application to healthcare.  The course begins with an overview of the field, a comparative examination of informatics and the role of the health informaticist. Students then receive a comprehensive introduction to the core concepts, potential benefits and the tools and technologies of informatics (i.e. common terminologies, data standards, development and implementation tools/strategies, data security and privacy).  The course then concludes with an overview of the policy as it relates to health information technology and perspectives on future directions.

This is not a self-paced course.  Students will progress through the course together.  Lessons will be posted one week at a time.  The previous week's lesson will remain available for the duration of the course.  Students who enroll after the start date of the course will have to contact the instructor regarding missed lessons.
