Leading Through Emotional Intelligence and Coaching

Key skills to take your leadership to the next level

Knowing how your emotions impact how you are perceived and how you react/respond based on those emotions is a significant success factor. Learning the skills of communicating with emotional intelligence will help you understand the part emotions play in communication and introduce you to brain science that tells you how it happens.

You will learn about the 6 Seconds EQ model, which uses 3 areas of focus with 8 competency areas so you have an awareness of where you are within this model. You will look at what causes you to be ‘hijacked,’ and the impact of stress on your communication. Having a common language around emotional intelligence and communication will serve to facilitate enhanced communication in the workplace.

Building upon the emotional intelligence knowledge you will then look at a ‘coaching’ mindset. With an awareness of how you react and respond, you will be prepared with skills to begin coaching. Coaching will teach you how to use a coaching approach to develop others in your organization. Coaching employees can help build trust, facilitate communication and increase performance. You will learn how coaching is different than other skills you use as a leader and know when to use coaching versus other approaches. You will practice specific skills such as listening and asking powerful questions that will enable you to be an effective coach when the situation calls for it.

Leading with Emotional Intelligence and Coaching consists of three full-day class sessions to unpack these important leadership skills. As a pre-work assignment for class, you will take an online emotional intelligence (EQ) assessment. Based on your responses to the questions on this assessment, you will receive a personalized report that identifies your level of EQ based on the 6 Seconds model.

This program meets the 20-hour ongoing leadership training and development requirements for the State of California, as defined by Government Code sections 19995.4(c)-(e).
