Personal Genomics and its Impact on Society and Medicine

Genomics, the study of an organism’s DNA, is rapidly changing how we view ourselves in terms of our ancestry, physical attributes and susceptibility to inherited diseases. At the same time, genomics is transforming society through its impact on health care through genetic diagnostics and reproductive choices to mitigate genetic risks. This class will provide students with a basic understanding of genetic information, human genetic diversity, genetic risk factors and how modern genomics affects medicine and society, including a discussion of genetic privacy and discrimination.
