Poetry: Meaning and Messages

Poets, like all writers, want to communicate thoughts or emotions to their readers. But they do so in ways very different from those of prose writers. Rhythm and rhyme, harmonious sounds, figurative language, symbolism, indirection and other techniques are all as important to poetry as the messages themselves. In the first meeting, these techniques will be studied, with illustrative poems and in the second session, members will submit (if they choose) some poetic efforts of their own. Course content will be presented for poetry enthusiasts—not as a serious academic exercise!
