Survey Mapping with Drones (sUAV)

The small unmanned air vehicle (sUAV or drone) is an amazing tool that’s increasingly utilized to perform a variety of functions in fields such as civil engineering, public safety and environmental analysis. This two-day workshop is intended to teach professionals in these (and related) fields how to operate an sUAV and incorporate this capability into their workflow to efficiently generate survey-quality orthomosaics for a variety of applications.

In the lecture portion of this course, students will learn the rules, regulations and procedures needed to pass the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) Part 107 Remote Pilot Commercial Exam. Students will then take that knowledge out into the field, where they’ll perform hands-on exercises, practicing manual sUAV maneuvers to capture survey-grade imagery for use in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). By the end of this course, students will be able to safely operate an sUAV and utilize its surveying capabilities to streamline tasks and improve accuracy and outcomes in their work.
