The Transcontinental Railroad: Transforming California and the Nation

This course is a 4-unit credit option for registered participants in the institute of the UC Davis History Project. Investigate the transcontinental railroad from its conceptual origins to the resulting social, political and economic impact. The Transcontinental Railroad inaugurated a national transportation and communications network and marketplace, a larger-scaled industrial capitalism and a larger-scaled labor movement. The Transcontinental Railroad also had a significant impact on Plains Indians, bison and captains of industry.
