Under the Soviet Shadow: Family History Meets Fiction

Visiting author Neville Frankel brings to light the well-researched family history that inspired a work of historical fiction. Frankel will provide a behind-the-scenes look into the fact-finding research of his ancestry dating back to Latvia, Russia, and South Africa during the 19th and 20th centuries. This lecture also sheds insight into the author’s creative process and the challenges of converting family history into historical fiction. Given current heightened interest in Russia, the discussion also provides an understanding of a Soviet era that has haunting overtones in today’s geopolitical climate.
