The Weimar Republic

The Great War, now known as World War I, was an unimaginable bloodbath that nearly destroyed European civilization. The killing ceased with the Armistice signed 100 years ago, effectively ending the 19th century and ushering in the 20th. The German Empire, which had been the most powerful nation in Europe, crumbled in defeat and revolution and was replaced by a democratic republic crafted by a national assembly in the city of Weimar. In this course, we will first review the historical background and causes of the Weimar Republic’s political failures. Next, we will consider how, after the collapse of the Republic, exiles fleeing the National Socialist regime brought Weimar culture to the United States and the rest of the world.
