Air Quality Analysis

Learn how to address the significant air quality challenges posed by increasing urbanization and development. Designed for planning and environmental protection professionals who manage, review, and prepare air quality and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions analyses, this course presents the principles of air quality and GHG assessment and regulation for land use and transportation projects. Through lectures and case studies, build your knowledge of air quality basics including a summary of criteria air pollutants, toxic air contaminants, and GHGs; their sources; and related health effects.

Additional topics include:

• Brief history of air quality regulation

• Federal, state, and regional regulatory framework

• Construction and operational emission source categories and a brief guide to data collection

• Current emission inventory modeling tools, including a real-time run-through of the California Emissions Estimator Model (CalEEMod)

• Overview of health risk assessments and dispersion modeling, including an introduction to AERMOD and HARP 2

• Components of air quality and GHG/climate change assessments under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), including a discussion of thresholds

• Recommendations for post-2020 GHG emissions analyses and other challenges associated with relevant case-law

Section Notes

This is an online, remote learning course, which consists of 6 hours of content and curriculum that is taught with pre-recorded lectures as well as at least one mandatory live Zoom session with the instructor(s). Pre-recorded lectures and live sessions are accessed via our Canvas learning system and Zoom. This course is the same length as a standard 1 day, in-person course, please be sure to plan your schedule accordingly. 

This course is open November 20 – November 22, 2024, with a live session on November 22, 2:00-4:00 PM PST.

Attendance of the live session is mandatory to receive credit for this course.  

We allow registration through the 12:00 PM PST (noon) on the first day of the course. We cannot extend course access beyond 11:59 PM on last day of class, so students pursuing a late enrollment acknowledge that they will have less time to complete the materials. Please contact the course representative with any questions.
