Online Public Health Informatics

Gain an overview of informatics applications in the public health domain, focusing on the collection, verification, exchange and utilization of data related to populations as well as the infrastructure, functions and tools used to generate public health knowledge. This course will explore data mining techniques and the use of geographical information systems in mapping public health data. Disease surveillance, web-based public health education, policy and the future of public health informatics will be addressed. View a course sample.

This is not a self-paced course.  Students will progress through the course together.  Lessons will be posted one week at a time.  The previous week's lesson will remain available for the duration of the course.  Students who enroll after the start date of the course will have to contact the instructor regarding missed lessons. 


Students should have completed a large portion of the certificate courses in Health Informatics prior to enrollment or consent of instructor/UC Davis Extension.


Elizabeth Dingbaum, M.P.H., is a public health informatics analyst and member of the Pathology Informatics team at the UC Davis Health System. She has been involved in the maintenance of the California Electronic Death Registration System and is now working on the development and implementation of the California Birth Registration System and the accompanying reporting system. She obtained her M.P.H. in epidemiology from UC Davis and previously worked at the California Department of Public Health in the Chronic Disease Control Branch to improve diabetes surveillance methods throughout the state.

Section Notes

Course begins January 16 and ends March 29, 2019. Enrollments will be accepted through the first day of the class. This course fulfills an elective as part of the Health Informatics Certificate program.
