A Low Impact Design Approach to Storm Water Management

Emerging regulations and increasing needs to mitigate the impacts of urban development on water quality have resulted in a completely new approach to managing storm water. Low Impact Development (LID) techniques can play a critical role in helping communities minimize the impact of development on rivers, streams, lakes and ground water.

Learn how to address new water quality regulations while improving the landscape and urban design character of communities. Examine design improvements utilizing landscaping, trees, bio-sales, rain gardens, permeable paving, green roofs and water harvesting to manage runoff and filter pollutants. Discuss constraints and limitations, and learn how these techniques can be incorporated into broader storm water management strategies. Tour neighborhoods designed with innovative storm water management techniques, and put research to practice with a hands-on design exercise.
