Christianity in the History of the United States

We live in a nation that has been profoundly shaped by religion, and, in turn, the American context has shaped religion. Some Europeans came to America to spread their form of Christianity in new lands, while others came to escape persecution. Eventually the founding fathers launched a daring new experiment to provide freedom of religion that greatly altered the shape and character of Christianity. The American frontier offered a place for a variety of utopian experiments and the development of creative new expressions of religious piety. This course will explore a range of themes that examine the many ways that Christianity has been shaped by the American experience.
