Jacksonian America: Part 1

Historians have typically dated the Age of Jackson from 1828-1848. Explore the rise of Andrew Jackson, a man of humble background, who came to dominate American politics. The course will analyze Jackson, and the other leaders he competed with for power, including John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay and John Calhoun. The major political issues that these men faced, including the bank wars of the period, the nullification crisis and American policy toward native tribes will be reviewed. We will also look at the defining characteristics of American society during this period that led to Jackson’s dominance and how these compare to our age since the election of Donald Trump.
