The Politics of Fashion

In this course, we will explore the politics of fashion in two contexts: 1) clothing and dress as political symbols (from the French Revolution to today’s pink “p***yhats” and 2) politicians’ use of clothing and dress to brand themselves and foster a sense of connection with potential voters. Drawing from historical and contemporary examples and images, we will consider the ways in which body fashioning becomes an individual and collective process of managing, seeking and resisting power.
